Instrument Exploration is a fun way to expose 3rd graders in the Parkland School District to the band and strings instruments they may choose to play in 4th grade. It takes place in the high school cafeteria from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at our district's Festival of the Arts. 3rd graders at each of our district's 8 buildings receive a special invitation to attend this event.

The elementary band/strings teachers run the event, but it is largely staffed by high school and middle school instrument presenters. High School and Middle School directors use the linked spreadsheet to staff the event with students who are both good players and have engaging personalities. Student presenters receive instructions on how to share their instrument.

When students arrive they are given a "passport" with pictures of all the instruments. As they visit each instrument station, their passport receives a stamp. If they acquire 5 or more stamps, they may take their passport back to the welcome station to enter a drawing for an iPod nano AND they may take their passport to the Music Boosters food concession to receive a free hot dog and coke!

This year our event was sponsored by the Music Boosters and a local business.

Every 15 minutes, all student presenters join together to play a brief excerpt from the "Raider's March" to show visitors the sound of all the instruments playing together. CLICK HERE for parts and MP3 accompaniment track.
